Lost in a Forest

This piece is why I don't do much work in graphite. I really love the look of a beautiful pencil drawing (Anthony Ryder's figure drawings are sublime) but, aside from the practice I need to get anywhere like good at it, this piece (which measures 21cm x 14cm) took me over 6 hours to complete, of which 5 hours was shading. Phew.

Inspiration

One of my favourite artists is Kate Thompson at Fractured Angelics. I was introduced to her ethereal and delicate work full of grace when working as part of Mermaid Circus earlier this year and I really like the pale colours and the delicate brush strokes. Looking at her work makes me feel connected to something beyond the material world.

Like so many other wonderful artists she runs some on line courses (at the trodden path) and this is a piece of mine inspired by her fabric & composition course.

I think it might be my favourite piece I've created so far.

Chiaroscuro

Trying something new to me... chiaroscuro = no lines/contours instead drawing shadow shapes only. I'm using an amazing book - The Artist's Complete Guide to Drawing the Head by William L. Maughan - which has really changed how I think about drawing.

Most of the drawing I've done previously has been contour drawing (round the edges) so this style is pretty tricky for me. But what an amazing effect. I'm blown away with how dimensional my piece looks and all I used were a couple of pastel pencils on a messy bit of journal page.

Apparently it's how Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Hmmm... I have a way to go!

Have you tried drawing like this? I think it's really going to help my painting too.

Life Book Yay or Nay?

The beautiful soul that is Tamara @ Willowing has advertised Lifebook 2014 and I am debating whether to sign up. On the up side you get 20+ teachers and 52 weeks of inspiration. On the down side there is a lesson every week which seems like one heck of a commitment. But I guess you don't have to do every lesson and can just do what appeals to you.

Hmmmm.... decisions, decisions.
